Working with Camfil, the Swedish Olympic Committee is countering the negative impact indoor air pollution can have on athletic performance

Olympic athletes are use to overcoming the odds and achieving great results, but when it comes to indoor air pollution – and the negative impact it can have on athletic performance – there often isn’t much they can do. Yet for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the story will be different for Sweden’s contingent of athletes. Working with Camfil – the world’s leading provider of clean air solutions – the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOC) is taking steps, both before and during the games, to improve indoor air quality (IAQ), and with it, perhaps, Sweden’s fortunes.

Air pollution is a particular concern in Rio, which has experienced significant air quality problems in recent years. As outdoor air pollution can all too easily seep indoors, harmful particles can find their way into athletes’ training, living, and competing venues. To keep that from happening, Camfil and the SOC are implementing a comprehensive array of initiatives, all intended to keep IAQ – and athletic performance – at optimal levels.

“The IAQ work we are doing with the Swedish Olympic team is based on ten years of discussions involving the SOC, its medical team, and Camfil,” says Anders Hedström, the Global Manager, Indoor Air Quality, at Camfil. “We have selected five IAQ ‘ambassadors’ prior to the games and will be measuring and evaluating the IAQ for their homes and training areas, and installing clean air systems and Camfil filters as needed.”

In late April 2016, a Camfil team will go to Rio to take IAQ measurements and install clean air solutions in athletes’ living quarters in the Olympic Village, as well as in the recreational areas and public relations and service center used by Sweden’s contingent. Outside the Olympic Village, in the main “Swedish Area” where the country’s sponsors will exhibit, Camfil will provide mobile air cleaning and explain and explore the outcome of IAQ tests performed before the Olympics.

Boosting IAQ has long been a priority for Camfil. The company leverages its half dozen global research centers to develop cutting-edge air filters that last longer, require less energy, and perform better than more traditionally designed products. Indeed, Camfil’s industry-leading can reduce energy usage by 20 to 40 percent, while increasing IAQ. That a true win-win proposition – both for those who buy air filters, and for those who rely on them. And for Sweden’s athletes, better air quality might just lead to another kind of win still: Olympic gold.

The world leader in air filtration systems, Camfil provides clean air solutions for hospitals, hotels, office buildings, educational institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. We provide the tools to achieve sustainability, maintain high air quality, and reduce airborne infections — all while lowering total cost of ownership.
